Past and present, day by day: Communication with former romantic partners, relationship-contingent self-esteem, and current relationship outcomes

•Communication with former partners (FPs) can be harmful for new relationships.•This study examined how FP communication affects former and current relationships.•A daily diary design was employed among undergraduates in relationships.•Communication with FPs was negatively associated with current satisfaction.•Associations only evident for those higher in relationship-contingent self-esteem.
