Large-scale cortico-subcortical functional networks in focal epilepsies: The role of the basal ganglia

•Focal epilepsies affect large-scale brain networks beyond the epileptogenic zones.•The functional network topology shifted away from random in focal epilepsies.•Subcortico-cortical connectivity decreased in epilepsy due to changes in weak links.•Basal ganglia–thalamus circuitry connectivity was not disturbed in focal epilepsy.•The connectivity between basal ganglia-thalamus circuitry and cortex was affected.
