Exploring tensions and conflicts in invasive species management: The case of Asian carp

•We investigated social and scientific conflicts in invasive species management.•As a case study we used potential management for invasive Asian carp in Minnesota.•We characterized social and scientific uncertainties leading to conflict/tension.•These uncertainties reinforced each other and can impede management action.•We suggested that deliberative, participatory processes can address the conflicts.
