•Tree sapwood area was correlated with DBH irrespective of species and location.•Maximum sap flux density ranged between 18±9 and 64±11gm−2s−1 at two elevations.•Daily maximum tree water use ranged from 2±4 to 42±11kgd−1 at two elevations.•Within a stand TWU was correlated with DBH irrespective of species.
