Lamb meat traceability: The case of Sambucana sheep

•The certification of typical products contributes to the conservation of local breeds.•DNA markers can be useful for lamb meat authentication.•Fourteen microsatellites discriminated the Sambucana from other nine sheep breeds.•Allocation and paternity tests effectively traced the ‘Guaranteed Sambucano lamb’.•The control system described could be easily implemented in local minor sheep breeds.
