摘要
Research on chronic diseases has shown that family members of patients are at increased risk for depression and anxiety and would likely benefit from routine screening for mental health issues; however, little research has been conducted to specifically investigate whether caregivers of patients with primary immunodeficiencies are routinely screened. The goal of this study was to assess how frequently providers are currently screening for mental health concerns among caregivers of patients with primary immunodeficiencies and to identify providers’ perceived barriers to caregiver screening. An online survey was developed to assess current provider mental health screening practices for caregivers of patients with primary immunodeficiencies and perceived barriers to screening. A link to the survey was distributed via the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) listserv; 82 responses were collected and analyzed. Only 31% of respondents reported that they routinely screen caregivers for mental health concerns at visits, although 95% reported that they believe caregiver mental health impacts patient outcomes. Providers reported multiple barriers to screening; time limitations, staffing limitations, and lack of resources were the most commonly reported. Although the majority of providers believe that caregiver mental health is an issue that could impact patient outcomes, few providers are currently screening due to a variety of barriers. Future areas of research include surveying caregivers to determine if they agree that this is an unmet need and developing strategies to overcome barriers to mental health screening.
