Vertically-Aligned Carbon Nanotube Arrays as Binder-Free Supports for Nickel Cobaltite based Faradaic Supercapacitor Electrodes

•VACNT array pore structure integrity is retained by freeze drying treatment.•Freeze-dried electrode shows 42% improved specific capacity over air-dried electrode.•Pulsed electrodeposition is used to achieve uniform coating of VACNT array.•Pulsed electrode shows 84% improved specific capacitance over the steady deposited.•Specific capacitance values of 970 Fg−1 with >80% retained capacity in 3000 cycles.
