•Base enhanched solvolysis of CF3 groups in meso-tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)porphyrin.•Sequential solvolysis of CF3 groups lead to AABB and AAAB type substitution pattern.•Trifluoromethyl groups are easily transformed to esters.
