•Composites composed of TiO2 nanoparticles/nanotubes and Ag@TiO2 nanoparticles for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).•Dramatic increase in photocurrent density and power conversion efficiency with the composite-based DSSCs.•A synergetic effect of fast electron conduction through TiO2 NTs and plasmonic enhancement of Ag NPs.
