Rational synthesis of silylated Beta zeolites and selective ring opening of 1-methylnaphthalene over the NiW-supported catalysts

•The distribution of acid sites in zeolites was modified by silylation with various alkyl chains.•Large silylation agents induce to deposit SiO2 on the external surface of zeolites.•NiW/silylated zeolite alters the balance of metallic and acidic functions.•Selective ring opening of 1-methylnaphthalene by NiW/silylated zeolite was tested.•The optimal balance of bi-functional catalysts improve conversion and selectivity.
