•Several recent studies have found a gap between what children say they should give in Dictator Games and what they actually give.•Evidence is reviewed for five potential explanations of the gap.•Individual self-regulation, social distance, and social learning emerge as three mechanisms by which children increase giving.•Theory of mind and moral knowledge show mixed effects on children's giving.
