•Effects of N application decisions on soybean yield were assessed across the US.•The analysis involved hierarchical models and conditional inference trees.•N application decisions had a small effect on soybean yield.•Limited N responses suggest that positive economic returns from N are unlikely.•Future experiments should assess interactions of N and other management factors.
