Simple models to predict grassland ecosystem C exchange and actual evapotranspiration using NDVI and environmental variables

•NDVI is a main driver of net ecosystem carbon exchange (NEE) in shortgrass steppe.•The NEE response is different on rain vs. non-rain days.•Models based on NDVI and weather related factors reproduced observed NEE patterns.•Rainfall event size and frequency strongly impact NEE.
