•Dogs with syringomyelia (SM) show a more negative judgement bias than those without SM.•SM dogs do not show a greater sensitivity to reward loss than SM-free dogs.•SM dogs scratch more than SM-free dogs but do not differ in jump up/down tests.•SM may be associated with negative affect in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
