Population characteristics of submicrometer-sized craters on regolith particles from asteroid Itokawa

•Submicrometer impact craters commonly appear on Itokawa particles.•The majority of the craters are probably formed by secondary ejecta impacts.•Secondary submicrometer craters can be produced anywhere on Itokawa's surface.•The impact flux of the craters are similar values for Itokawa and the Moon.
