•GGPPS gene encoding 359 amino acids was isolated from Rosa damascena (NCBI, Accession No. KX661005).•Phylogenetic analysis showed that Damask rose GGPPS is more closely related to Fragaria.•GGPPS gene could be responsible for volatile component production and developmental of carotenoids pigments.•Increase in CCD1 expression resulted in petal discoloration and an increase the amount of the Ketone component.•The expression pattern of DXR gene revealed that it plays key role in monoterpenes biosynthesis.
