•The AGR-3/4 test train was successfully irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor.•Burnup, fast fluence, and irradiation temperature goals were achieved.•Most design-to-fail (DTF) particles failed as expected.•DTF particles provided a source of fission products for transport analysis.•Impurities added to the experiment did not have an appreciable impact on fuel performance.
