摘要

•Stationary shoulder supporting and tilting pin penetration friction stir welding (STFSW) is invented.•The kissing bond could be completely eliminated by STFSW and no other defects are induced.•A sandwich structure and tornado shaped lamellar structures are typical characterizations.•A model is established to reveal the material flow mechanism in welding process.
