Improving traffic management through consideration of uncertainty and stochastics in traffic flow

•Stochastic traffic is insufficiently considered in traffic management evaluation.•Ignoring these stochastics is shown to lead to vastly bias outcomes.•Approaches have been developed to include stochastic uncertainty and fluctuations.•A framework is proposed and demonstrated using these start-of-the-art approaches.•The case study demonstrates their effectiveness and highlights the necessity.
