Sustainable product design and development: A review of tools, applications and research prospects

•Recent (2007–2017) product design tools and case studies were reviewed.•A generic classification scheme for the tools was proposed and discussed.•Most of the reviewed sustainable product design (SPD) tools were immature.•The majority of the partial SPD (P-SPD) tools were usable at early design stages.•Most of the reviewed P-SPD and SPD tools were based on a life cycle perspective.
