Carbon fluxes and interannual drivers in a temperate forest ecosystem assessed through comparison of top-down and bottom-up approaches

•Top-down and bottom-up approaches provided consistent estimates of forest C fluxes.•Including the C flux to mycorrhizal fungi improved agreement among approaches.•Interannual variation in growing season C uptake was correlated to spring climate.•Interannual variation in wood growth was not related to carbon supply.
