Opportunities for sustainable intensification of coffee agro-ecosystems along an altitudinal gradient on Mt. Elgon, Uganda

•Coffee yield was similar among systems, but shade improved yields at low altitude.•Banana densities in coffee systems increased with increasing altitude.•Shade tree densities in coffee systems decreased with increasing altitude.•Intercropping with bananas and/or trees increased with decreasing farm size.
