Combined effects of drought and high temperature on photosynthetic characteristics in four winter wheat genotypes

•Heat and drought have an interactive effect on photosynthetic parameters.•Negative effect of high temperature on carbon assimilation is increased by drought.•Drought accelerates decline in water use efficiency at high temperatures.•Temperature and drought interactions are genotype specific.
