Extending Modulation Bandwidth of SOI Thermo-Optic Phase Shifters Through Digital Pre-Emphasis

Abstract:

We demonstrate a digital pre-emphasis technique for extending the modulation bandwidth of a thermo-optic phase shifter in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) CMOS. The electrical input to the phase shifter is pre-emphasized, increasing 3-dB optical modulation bandwidth 6.3 times from 8.1 kHz to 50.7 kHz.
