•Dynamic adhesion of microbeads as bacteria surrogates to NF membranes investigated.•A sophisticated CFD model was used to calculate the mass transfer of NaCl to NF membranes.•The adhesion pattern was explained by a model considering permeate flux.•Surface coverage of microbeads on NF 90 was predicted and validated.
