•Participants with HFASD performed more poorly than TD group on reading comprehension and advanced theory of mind measures.•The significant predictors of reading comprehension in the HFASD group were oral language and ToM.•In the TD group, the significant predictors of reading comprehension were word reading and oral language, not ToM.•Social cognition should be considered when identifying targets for intervention to improve reading outcomes for students with ASD.
