Inflammatory tear cytokine levels after eye cosmetic use

Purpose: Inflammatory biomarkers in tear fluid vary with ocular surface health. The aim of this randomized cross-over study was to investigate if eyeliner application induces ocular surface inflammation in healthy subjects. Levels of inflammatory cytokine, interleukin (IL)-8, in tears were assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Eyeliner application outside the lash line (ELO) was compared with eyeliner application within the lash line (ELI), after 1 and 7 days of use.
