•Compares outdoor performance of 8 spectroradiometers for classifying sun simulators.•All labs assure the classification of spectral match within the 25% limit (class A).•One spectral extension option assures higher level of quality within the 12.5% limit.•The need for improvements in calibration, setup and procedures is highlighted.
