Modeling transient soil moisture dichotomies in landscapes with intermixed land covers

•Soil moisture sensing networks are typically deployed under grassland vegetation.•Conditions under grassland can differ greatly from those under adjacent cropland.•A neural network translated grassland soil moisture into cropland soil moisture.•This efficient new approach does not rely on temporal stability or complex models.•The approach revealed the dichotomous soil moisture pattern within a SMAP grid cell.
