Scalable enumeration approach for maximizing hosting capacity of distributed generation

•A scalable optimization method is proposed to maximize a DG hosting capacity.•The method enumerates all possible optimal configurations while simultaneously considering optimal DG placement.•A compressed data structure is utilized to represent the solution space compactly.•The method obtains 1.49 × 1018 optimal configurations in 17.1 h for a network containing 235 switches.
