•We studied bryophytes in 1050 forest plots of different management types.•Higher bryophyte diversity in managed than unmanaged forests.•Higher conifer proportion increased total but not woodland bryophyte diversity.•Woodland species richness indicates forest integrity better than the total richness.•Decreased management intensity promotes epiphyte and woodland species diversity.
