A Study for Assessing Wave Energy of the Bay of Bengal

Bangladesh has a large coastal region in the Bay of Bengal. This sea water is a great source of renewable wave energy. In this study, assessment of wave energy has been carried on in the Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong. High-generated waves available from April to October make it possible to exploit power at large scale while the scope to extract power is diminished for remaining periods of the year. In this paper, a simulation model has been developed using Delft 3D (an open source software-integrated modeling software) and SWAN (third-generation wave model) for prediction of wave energy. The results obtained from simulation model varied a lot from field data obtained from ECMFW (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). Nevertheless, the trend of the availability of wave energy was quite similar to results published previously.
