•UV-C irradiated gallic acid (GA) showed enhanced antimicrobial activity against E. coli O157:H7.•The antimicrobial effect of UV-C irradiated GA was persistent for at least 4 weeks.•ROS and quinone contributed to the antimicrobial activity of UV-C irradiated GA.•UV-C irradiated GA could be used as a novel sanitizer for selected produce surface.
