•2-D sheet-like G/TNS was synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method.•G/TNS mainly composes of anatase while sodium titanate also forms.•G/TNS showed much higher solar-light-driven photocatalytic activity than anatase.•Graphene can transfer photo-excited electrons and enhance visible light absorption.•OH attack on reactive sites on 4-CP with high Fukui index leads to its degradation.
