Instruction-prompted objective behaviors as proxy for subjective measures in a driving simulator

•A more ecologically valid approach was proposed to study behaviors and perceptions in a driving simulator.•Two experimental instructions were used to manipulate behavior: driving safely and driving quickly.•With the instruction to drive quickly, driving behaviors may be used as a proxy for subjective perceptions of traffic delays.
