Association of Caliciopsis pinea Peck and Matsucoccus macrocicatrices Richards with eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) seedling dieback

•Matsucoccus macrocicatrices and cankers were positively correlated with dieback.•M. macrocicatrices was positively correlated with cankers.•Caliciopsis pinea was the only fungal species that produced large cankers.•Other fungi isolated from cankers were endophytic fungal species.•M. macrocicatrices and C. pinea form an insect-pathogen complex on white pine.
