•TST promoted cardiac hypertrophy in aged rats.•LV contractile function during IR was increased in aged rats treated with TST.•Infarct size of aged hearts was increased in TST-treated aged rat hearts.•p-Akt levels of aged hearts were decreased by TST.•Susceptibility to IR injury of adult hearts was not significantly affected by TST.
