•Passive acoustic monitoring provides data on cetacean occurrence near fishing gear.•Sounds from false killer whales were heard in over 20% of 90 monitored fishing sets.•57% of false killer whale calling bouts occurred while gear was being hauled.•During the haul, false killer whales appear to be moving away from the fishing vessel.•False killer whale likely depredate bait more often than previously recognized.
