•New generic multi-level microscopic traffic modelling and simulation framework.•Combines idealized (collision-free) models with HF mechanisms for perception and response.•Uses Endsley's three-level awareness model and Fullers risk allostasis theory.•Varying with perception errors and different response adaptions independently from chosen CF model.•Results in endogenous mechanisms for inter- and intra-driver differences in driving behavior.•Can generate multiple plausible HF mechanisms to explain the same observable traffic phenomena.
