•Operations using four carbon divertor configurations in JET are described.•Carbon with Be, Ni, etc eroded in the main chamber deposit at the inner divertor.•Carbon is preferentially eroded and migrates to the shadowed divertor corners.•Deuterium (and tritium from D-T fuelling) were co-deposited with the carbon.
