Forensic comparison of PVC tape backings using time resolved LA-ICP-MS analysis

•A forensic LA-ICP-MS method for the comparison of PVC tape backings was developed.•A polymer-based in-house calibration standard was produced and characterized.•87 different source samples and multiple samples from 3 sources were analyzed.•An optimized criterion provided 97.5% discrimination and 100% correct associations.
