Age and growth of the blue shark (Prionace glauca) in the Indian Ocean

•Age and growth was estimated for the Indian Ocean blue shark.•A 2-parameter von Bertalanffy growth model with fixed size-at-birth was considered the most adequate.•There were differences between sexes, with females growing slower than males.•The maximum age estimated was 25 years.•The maximum age estimated is the oldest attributed age to this species so far.
