•BiO/ZnO/RGO composites were successfully synthesized by two-step hydrothermal method.•BiO/ZnO/RGO composites exhibit high photocatalytic activity for reduction of Cr(VI).•Enhanced photocatalytic activity is due to efficient separation and transfer of e--h+ pairs.
