The design of co-planar Bi-Blade Antenna (BBA) with a double-Y balun having a transition between the microstrip to co-planar stripline has been presented for ultra-wideband applications, such as ground penetrating radar and microwave wideband imaging. A portion of the dielectric is removed from the region between the two blades to increase the path length of the fields in that region, thereby reducing the minimum operating frequency within a specified dimension. The designed prototype provides an impedance bandwidth of 22:1 corresponding to the 0.48 GHz to 10.80 GHz frequency range, along with a maximum realized gain of around 10 dBi.
