•Biochar was synthesized from abundantly available waste wood sawdust.•Higher biomass productivity (17.63 mg L−1d−1) was recorded in biochar-Cp cells.•Highest dye removal was observed by biochar-Cp cells at pH 3 after 180 min.•Biochar-Cp cells were rich in C16 and C18 fatty acids.
