Effect of tungsten alloying on magnetic properties of amorphous Ni-P
Journal of Alloys and Compounds(2019)
摘要
Adding small fractions of tungsten to near-eutectic amorphous Ni–P effectively stabilizes the resulting amorphous Ni–W–P alloy against crystallization. On exposure to heat, the presence of tungsten retards the crystallization of ferromagnetic phases and decreases the total magnetization. To understand this behavior, phase formation during heat treatment and accompanying changes in the microstructure were studied by X-ray diffractometry and by transmission electron microscopy, respectively. We propose a model explaining the impact of tungsten on the magnetic properties. Accordingly, tungsten slows the diffusional transport required to form crystalline Ni. Moreover, tungsten gradually dissolves into the crystallized Ni, decreasing its saturation magnetization. This can have important applications e. g. for buffer layers on hard disk platters, where the heat exposure required by manufacturing must not induce ferromagnetism in the buffer as this would interfere with information storage in the active ferromagnetic film on top.
