A three-dimensional macroporous network structured chitosan/cellulose biocomposite sponge for rapid and selective removal of mercury(II) ions from aqueous solution

摘要
•A chitosan/cellulose biocomposite sponge was facilely synthesized.•The sponge can be rapidly separated and easily regenerated by simple extrusion.•Uptaking >97% of ultimate adsorption capacity for Hg(II) was achieved within 2 min in aqueous solution.•The sponge shows selective adsorption of Hg(II) ions when coexisting with other heavy metal ions.•The selective adsorption mechanism mainly via a chelation was revealed by FTIR, XPS and DFT calculations.
