•The best filter types for the clarification stage of influenza Virus-like particles were identified.•Primary and secondary clarification filters were evaluated (Normal Flow Filtration and Tangential Flow Filtration)•The number of cellulose layers and pore sizes impacts the filtration efficiency.•High product recovery and clearance of key process impurities was efficiently achieved.•The selected train ensured scalable and strain-independent clarification.
