Growth rate rather than growing season length determines wood biomass in dry environments

•Little is known whether wood production is limited by growth rate.•Xylem production under drought environments is mainly explained by growth rate.•Under drier conditions, a longer growing season will not benefit xylem formation.•Warming-induced drought may limit carbon sequestration by reducing growth rate.•Do not extrapolate results of this study to drought-prone deciduous tree species.
