•Novel Q&T alloy HT10 and commercial 2¼Cr-1 Mo F22 corrode at comparable rates.•Higher temperature tempering, for longer time, decreases hardness and corrosion rates.•Tempering changes the carbide precipitate dispersion and dislocation density, and lowers corrosion rates.•For HT10, cathodic corrosion kinetics decreases with longer tempering hold times.
